In addition to smart phones and smart watches, what are the giants such as Apple Samsung still playing? The answer is wearable medical equipment. As an eternal topic of human concern, health, once combined with high-tech wearables, could ignite emerging markets that could exceed $100 billion in the next decade. If pre-tech companies are only exploring business layouts and models, then there are already a variety of wearable medical devices that have entered our sights.
In May of this year, Samsung released the "Simband" health wristband in San Francisco. The next day Intel also launched a smart T-shirt product, while Apple stood taller and launched the "healthkit" platform in June, hoping to attract more manufacturers. . In addition, many domestic and foreign manufacturers such as Jawbone, å’•å’š and so on have also launched wearable devices with a health concept.
Looking at the various wearable medical devices available in the market, I found a problem that most manufacturers are limited to the concept of "health" as a gimmick rather than a substance. Most products only provide such steps as A few functions, such as heart rate detection and calorie calculation, are severely homogenized. You can buy a product at random, it is difficult to say that it is fundamentally different from other products. So, can wearable medical devices only play these shallow concepts? In fact, it is not true. I believe that manufacturers can fly their imaginations, and there are more ways to wear medical devices.
Fully exploit the potential value of the data
At present, most wearable medical devices on the market have realized the collection of some health data, such as heart rate, exercise volume, sleep time, etc., but it is not enough in the system management and potential value mining of data. For the user, the heart rate is good, and the amount of exercise is just an abstract number, from which it is difficult to get a perceptual understanding. Some products can indeed achieve "health management" to a certain extent. For example, if you have less exercise for a period of time, you will be reminded of more exercise. Or if the heart rate is not normal for a period of time, it will remind you to take a break, but on the whole, few companies can cooperate with professional medical institutions to explore the physical conditions revealed by the data from a more professional perspective. And if this can be done, wearable medical devices can also spawn more business models.
CardioNet from the United States is a Nasdaq-listed company. Its product MCOT is a wearable medical device that records the patient's ECG data within 30 days and transmits the data to the company's monitoring center via the network. Based on the support of professional medical institutions and the company's research on big data, CardioNet's back office can conduct in-depth analysis and diagnosis of these data, and generate reports to be sent to patients. At the same time, once the patient is found to have an abnormal heart rate, it can be sent to the monitoring center for recording and analysis by a dedicated medical staff, and an alarm will be issued to the doctor in time when a life crisis is detected.
Because the product's detection effect is exceptionally good, and often can find potential problems when the patient does not feel uncomfortable, CardioNet also attracted the attention of insurance companies. In June last year, the company signed a three-year cooperation agreement with United Health Insurance, which will purchase a large number of products to serve more than 70 million health insurance customers.
In the data value mining, some companies have adopted another innovative business model. In the United States, there are already companies that try to provide wearable medical devices to users for free, at the cost of which they must agree to provide the data collected by the device to the insurance company. The insurance company pays to purchase the data, through which they can analyze the user's living habits as a basis for adjusting the relevant premiums. In fact, this is not innovation. For example, Progressive's driving behavior tracker will establish a link between premiums and policyholders' driving habits. In the past 5 years, it has won more than 150,000 customers. Now technology companies just take this One set moved to a wearable medical device.
OFweek Electronic Engineering Network will hold a “ Human Sensor Network and Wearable Devices †online seminar on July 29th. The conference invited Dr. Wang Lei from the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to explain how to combine “wearing smart devices†and “ mobile medical healthâ€. "Industrial hotspots, detailed sharing of key technologies in this field, including medical integrated circuit design, human proximal communication, biomedical algorithm development and health big data analysis.
