For many years, new media artist Amy Karle has been working to explore the relationship between humans and technology through derivative art. A recent project she called “Regenerative Reliquary†continues this exploration. In this project she is particularly concerned about how the body and human cells survive beyond the human body by creating a human hand. The astounding “Regeneration of the Relics†is currently on display at Autodesk's innovative incubator, Pier 9, which features a complex 3D printed hand-shaped support on which Karle grows human cells.
On a personal level, using human cells to create a hand is significant for Karle, who has been an active volunteer in several 3D printed prosthetic organizations, including Superhero Cyborgs, Kid Mob, and E-Nable, etc., gave her varying degrees of inspiration and inspired her project.
According to Karle, another inspiration for regenerating sacred objects comes from human bones. She explained that this is the structure and foundation that underpins our body. Although we may think that these bones are basically static, they actually have incredible dynamics and vitality that are vital to our lives and health. The artist explained: “When I started exploring regenerative medicine, I started researching bones, medical implant designs, and additive manufacturing. I have produced 3D printed artwork for many different kinds of bones. Now, My main concern is the human hand. The most recognizable bones of human beings are the hand bones and the skull. We express ourselves through our hands and use our hands to make tools.
In creating this 3D printed scaffold, Karle worked with bioscientist Chris Venter and materials scientist John Vericella to design a 3D model of a dynamic scaffold based on her own hand bone structure. When designing the structure of the house, Karle had to make sure it was porous to facilitate cell growth and to build it in a way that promoted cell adhesion and growth. Equally important, the hand bone scaffold must be made of a biocompatible and biodegradable material. Ultimately, the result of the design is a complex human hand bone shape that incorporates a lace-like structure.
