Nitric oxide controls plant flowering

Scientists report that the transformation of plants from long leaves to flowering requires a little nitric oxide. Blossoming at the right time is the key to maximizing reproductive opportunities, controlled by internal and external signals. It has been known that nitric oxide plays an important role in animal signaling molecules and it exists in and around plants. Yikun He and colleagues studied how this gaseous molecule helps Arabidopsis plants to enter the flowering stage from the “green” growth stage. They report that exposing the plant to external nitrogen oxide delayed flowering. Variation in the Noci gene also delays flowering and increases the production of nitric oxide. Altering gene expression in two different channels that help control growth to flowering transition also delayed flowering.
