Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in the United States recently reported that they used a high-dose, treated measles virus to "cure" an advanced multiple myeloma in an American woman. However, the researchers also stressed that this therapy is still in the initial stages of human trials.
According to the new issue of the Mayo Clinic Journal, the cancer of this 49-year-old woman has spread to the whole body before treatment. The forehead has a tumor with a diameter of 3 cm. The measles virus therapy developed by the researchers selectively kills myeloma plasma cells. The woman got a "complete remission" after a shot, and has been maintained for more than six months.
Another 65-year-old woman with multiple myeloma did not achieve the desired results after the same treatment. However, the researchers said that imaging technology clearly showed that the injected measles virus still targeted the woman's myeloma plasma cells.
It should be emphasized that the measles vaccine usually contains only 10,000 units of measles virus, and the two patients in this study have not been exposed to measles before. They started treatment from 1 million units of virus and eventually increased to 100 billion. The effect is only seen when the amount of virus in the unit is large. This large amount of virus is enough to provide measles vaccination for 10 million people. The researchers said that the two patients had no other treatment options for tumor spread before receiving this experimental treatment.
Regarding the significance of this outcome, the researchers point out that it conceptually suggests that "viral therapy," a method that infects and destroys cancer cells without damaging normal tissues, can effectively treat fatal multiple myeloma.
Viral therapy dates back to the 1950s, and tens of thousands of cancer patients have been treated with different viruses to date, but this is the first time that patients with tumor spread have achieved complete remission.
The Mayo Clinic Journal said in an all-in-one editorial: "These results are exciting, and they ultimately validate the clinical potential of such therapies. However, there is more work to be done."
