An implantable device designed to combat obesity has recently been approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This device, called Maestro, works like a pacemaker that sends periodic electrical pulses to the nerve endings of the stomach to avoid the pain of hunger.
Those who participated in the experiment lost 8.5% more weight than those who received placebo. CBS reported that although this figure still has a gap with the goal of 10% weight loss, the FDA advisory team concluded that its benefits have outweighed the risks.
