Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that causes bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Developed by a team at the University of Western Australia, the belt prototype uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology and acoustic sensing technology originally used to track the sound of termites.
Scientists initially observed 68 participants, 31 of whom were clinically diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and 37 had a healthy digestive system. All of these people were fasted for a period of time after eating the standard meal for 40 minutes and then wearing a belt for two hours.
When the people involved in the test were wearing belts, the belt recorded the noise from their intestines. Using these data, artificial intelligence creates an acoustic index that distinguishes the visceral and healthy visceral sound patterns of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Next, the belt was used by another 30 volunteers, half of whom were patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the other half were not. This time, the device was used to try to determine who had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), with an accuracy rate of 87% in the test. The researchers said that this probability is likely to continue to improve.
Dr. Josephine Muir said: "This research allows us to validate the concept. Once we further develop such a belt and test more patients, the tool will be included in the primary medical procedure for the diagnosis of IBS, in the human body, In a weak state of illness, it is hoped that this new technology will provide a less invasive way to diagnose."
