New portable system developed in Germany for home visits

Release date: 2013-09-25

Frail elderly people are often reluctant to go to the hospital because of inconvenience. This will not only delay their treatment, but also cause mental stress. German researchers have developed a mobile diagnostic system that works with smartphones to bring the gospel to older people at home.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology in Germany recently issued a statement saying that the portable system called “Environmental Life Assistance” can be connected to the medical center through a smartphone. Older people have it, they can receive doctor's supervision and diagnosis at home.
At present, the researchers' first-generation system includes three sensors integrated on the same platform: very small potentiostats can evaluate biochemical information in patient test reports, such as glucose, lactate, cholesterol, etc.; Sensors can be used to detect biomarkers; blood oxygen saturation sensors can monitor heart rate and arterial oxygen saturation.
The diagnostic system transmits this data to the smartphone via Bluetooth, and an application on the smartphone processes the data and sends it to the server in the healthcare center for use by the doctor.
Researchers hope that the system will be increasingly used in real life to monitor diseases related to aging. Also involved in the development of this system are the University of Sharjah University Hospital in Germany and the German T-System Project Research Group.
