New method is expected to alleviate chemotherapy-induced pain

U.S. researchers said on the 29th that they have discovered a new method that can block pain from the root cause and hopefully relieve the pain caused by cancer chemotherapy.

A new study published in the US "Cell Report" magazine showed that injection of a natural protein "apolipoprotein AI binding protein" into the spinal cord of mice can inhibit and reverse the inflammatory response and cell activity associated with the process of pain production. The pain relief effect lasts for about two months without affecting the motor function of the mice.

The researchers explained that "Apolipoprotein AI binding protein" has previously been used to treat atherosclerosis. Recent studies have shown that it can also inhibit "Toll-like receptor 4" located on the cell surface. The latter can "search for" the signal of infection or tissue damage like an antenna and is associated with pain.

Tony Jax, co-author and professor of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, said that opioids only inhibit pain and the source of pain remains. And their method "suppresses the underlying mechanisms that cause pain, not cover up the symptoms," and "actually changes the process of pain itself."
