Medical use: 3D printing trachea saved the child's life

The doctor said that he could not walk out of the hospital alive, but 3D printing technology allowed him to survive healthily.

The hippocampus in Ohio, USA, has a congenital defect in the trachea. After six weeks of birth, the patient has difficulty breathing. After the doctor puts a 3D printed artificial trachea in his throat, I can breathe normally.

3D printing technology is used in clinical medicine for the first time in the world. The New England Journal of Medicine recently reported on this. Compile / Xu Min

The little hippocampus was born at the end of 2011 and is now 19 months old. He developed difficulty breathing six weeks after birth. "At the time, his face turned green and he stopped breathing." Xiao Haima's father said that he was sent to the hospital for rescue and recovered through cardiac resuscitation. When the two-month-old is older, the situation of the little hippocampus becomes more serious and can only be sustained by a ventilator.

"A lot of doctors say that it is very likely that they can't be discharged alive. It's terrible," said the little hippocampus' mother. "We are praying every day, I hope he can get through the storm."

A doctor at the Children's Hospital advised the little hippocampus to go to a hospital in Michigan for surgery. He said there was experimenting with an artificial trachea that the organism could break down.

On February 9, 2012 (3 months after the birth of the little hippocampus), Xiao Haima underwent an operation at CSMott Children's Hospital in Michigan: the 3D printed trachea was placed in the missing part of the small hippocampal trachea.

The doctor first printed 100 mini air tubes using 3D technology and made a suitable shape and size with a computer laser. The next day, with the permission of the US Food and Drug Administration, the doctor implanted one of the mini trachea into the throat of the small hippocampus, the missing part of the trachea. The little hippocampus breathed smoothly, and after a year or so, there was no difficulty in breathing.

It is understood that this part of the printed trachea has a slit, and as the small hippocampus grows, the trachea will swell. This is not possible with other fixed artificial tracheal transplants.

According to biomedical engineer Scott Hollister, the artificial trachea can degrade and be completely absorbed by the body within three years.

"He is very healthy now," said Glein Green, an ENT specialist at the hospital. Now the hippocampus is ready for tracheotomy and cannulation.
