Life sciences company Longeveron receives $3.8 million in funding for stem cell aging fragility research

Recently, according to foreign media information, life science company Longeveron received a $3.8 million NIH SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant for its research on stem cell therapy for aging vulnerability.

Founded in 2014, Longeveron, based in Miami, USA, is a regenerative medical treatment company that develops biologic solutions for aging and aging-related diseases. Designed to provide innovative biologic solutions for age-related diseases by producing allogeneic MSCs from adult bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.

Longeveron's MSC (Mesenchymal Stem Cell) products are derived from the bone marrow of young and healthy adult donors. Last year, Longeveron published Phase I and Phase II clinical studies in the Journal of Geriatrics to assess the safety and efficacy of MSCs in patients with aging weakness. The company is currently conducting an expanded phase IIb aging vulnerability study.

It is reported that Longeveron is also conducting a phase I clinical trial to evaluate the clinical diagnosis of MSCs in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In addition, there is an I / II trial to assess the safety and efficacy of stem cells in improving influenza vaccine immune responses in elderly vulnerable patients.

The $3.8 million funded this time is the second NIH grant that Longeveron has received this year. On January 9, Longeveron said it had received a $1.15 million STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) grant through NIH's Fast Track Program to develop drugs to treat metabolic syndrome.

The company said the grant will be used in clinical studies of its MSCs to treat multiple systemic aging syndromes in the senile syndrome. “More and more older people are aware of the importance of diagnosing and treating this disease because it is not the inevitable result of aging. We believe that bio-driven cell-based therapies may have a significant beneficial effect on the disease. Longeveron co-founder Joshua Hare said in a statement.

In addition to the NIH SBIR grant, the company announced on May 22 this year that it received a $750,000 grant from the US technology development company TEDCO. In addition, the company was previously funded by the Alzheimer's Disease Association and TEDCO to study clinical trials of Alzheimer's disease and left ventricular dysplasia syndrome.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) was founded in 1887 in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, and is the highest level medical and behavioral research institution in the United States. The agency's mission is to explore the fundamentals of life's nature and behavior and to use it to extend human life and prevent, diagnose and treat diseases and disabilities. The research results obtained by NIH in recent decades have greatly improved the health of human beings. Currently, the agency is working on Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR), two programs that provide opportunities for US small businesses to participate in federal research and development with significant commercial potential.
