According to the Italian Evening Post, the research team led by Italian scientists led to significant advances in cancer research and discovered the driving genes that cause the most aggressive brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme. The research was published in the recently published journal Nature.
Glioblastoma is a cancer that can occur in people of all ages. The high-risk population is 45 to 70 years old. Even after receiving treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the survival rate of most patients is only a few years. .
The research team used a number of research methods such as big data analysis to successfully discover that some glioblastomas are caused by fusion of FGFR3 and TACC3 genes. The fusion of these two genes greatly increases the abnormal activity of mitochondria, resulting in the human body. Cells produce too much energy, causing rapid division and uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. At the same time, the researchers also observed that this same gene fusion is also present in some lung cancer, esophageal cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and head and neck cancer, and the cancer patient population involved is very large.
Based on this finding, the research team is developing a treatment that simply interrupts tumor growth by simply 'closing' the driver gene, using a "targeting" drug to directly inhibit mitochondrial abnormal activity. The team has observed in the tumor cell culture and mouse model tests to prevent mitochondria from producing too much energy and preventing tumor recurrence. The joint team of Italian and French scientists will conduct clinical research on "targeted" drugs. (Technology Department)
